Hanagatami (Flower Basket) : PhotoStory

In Echizen Province (present-day Fukui Prefecture), Lady Teruhi is the beloved favorite of imperial prince Ōatobe. She reads a letter from the prince.

The prince has departed for the capital to ascend the throne as Emperor Keitei, leaving Teruhi by herself.

A basket of favorite flowers from the emperor has been delivered with the letter. Devastated, she returns to the village.

One day, the emperor is out viewing autumn leaves with his entourage.

Teruhi is driven crazy by her love for the emperor. With a maid carrying the flower-basket, she heads for the capital.

Nearing the capital, Teruhi rushes to confront the imperial procession.

Teruhi appeals to the emperor with a dance that tells the tragic love story of a Han dynasty emperor and his concubine.

The emperor sees the flower-basket and resolves to take Teruhi back to the capital. Teruhi is filled with joy and thankful that they are reunited.
