Lady Kogō, the lover of Retired Emperor Takakura, has hidden herself away. As commanded, court official Minamoto no Nakakuni leaves for Sagano to look for her.

On the evening of the beautiful moon on Aug. 15, Nakakuni expects Lady Kogō to be playing the koto. He rides his horse while listening carefully.

Nakakuni knows the sound of Lady Kogō's playing from hearing it at court. He stops at the run-down house where he finds it.

Surprised by the sudden visit, Lady Kogō refuses to see him. Nakakuni waits patiently under the eaves of the house.

After the intercession of the maid, Nakakuni is finally invited into the house.

Nakakuni gives Lady Kogō a love letter from Retired Emperor Takakura and tells her how Takakura has been since their separation.

Nakakuni accepts a letter from Lady Kogō, performs a dance at a farewell party, and returns to the capital.
